India batter Shreyas Iyer remains under medical supervision at a Sydney hospital after sustaining a laceration to his spleen during the third ODI against Australia. While there is no set timeline for his discharge, the 29-year-old is reported to be stable and continues to be monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI said in a statement.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the national cricket board added.
Shreyas picked the injury when he ran back from point to complete a catch to dismiss Alex Carey. He immediately clutched his left rib cage in pain and signalled for medical attention before being helped off the field. He did not return for the remainder of Australia’s innings.
At the time, the BCCI had issued a brief update stating that he had been taken to the hospital for “further evaluation and assessment.” His recovery timeline remains uncertain.
A member of the BCCI’s medical team continues to stay with Shreyas in Sydney, even as the rest of the ODI squad returned home following the series. Players selected for the T20I leg have travelled to Canberra, where India held their first training session on Monday.
India won the third ODI by nine wickets but lost the three-match series 2-1 after defeats in Perth and Adelaide. The five-match T20I series begins on October 29 in Canberra, followed by matches in Melbourne and Hobart.
Shreyas, who is not part of the T20I squad, will be aiming to recover in time for India’s next ODI assignment in the series against South Africa, starting November 30 in Ranchi.
