Shaheen Shah Afridi has found himself at the centre of yet another controversy in the Pakistan Super League 2026 season, with the Lahore Qalandars captain facing disciplinary action over an alleged breach of team hotel security protocols.

The franchise has imposed a fine of PKR 1 million (approximately USD 3,600) on Afridi following the incident during the ongoing season.

According to ESPNcricinfo, the Qalandars confirmed the decision in an official statement, stating that the move was aimed at “upholding discipline and ensuring accountability” within the squad. The management, however, clarified that no action would be taken against Sikandar Raza, who was also named in the police report.

The matter came to light after Punjab police flagged a potential security lapse involving the entry of four “unauthorised” individuals into the team hotel. In a formal letter addressed to PSL CEO Salman Naseer, a deputy police inspector alleged that Afridi and Raza had disregarded established security protocols by facilitating the visitors’ entry.

The letter further claimed that the players had “forcefully escorted” the individuals to a team room on Saturday night, where they reportedly stayed for nearly three hours, raising concerns around player safety and compliance with tournament regulations.

The incident has since drawn attention to adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), especially given the heightened security measures typically enforced during high-profile tournaments like the PSL.

Breaking his silence on the issue, Raza offered clarification and took full responsibility for the incident. He stated that the individuals in question were his close friends and family members and that Afridi had only assisted him at his request.

“Shaheen did not force anyone. My friends and family had come, and at my request, Shaheen helped them (come up to my room),” Raza said.

He further admitted that he may not have been fully aware of the restrictions in place. “If these were the SOPs, that visitors were not allowed into our rooms, I wasn’t aware, and to some extent, Shaheen wasn’t either.”

In a notable admission, Raza absolved Afridi of blame, adding, “The culprit here is me, not Shaheen. He only came down at my request because they were my close family and friends. I did not want to meet them in the business centre.”

While the franchise has taken action against its captain, the episode underscores the importance of strict adherence to security protocols in leagues where player safety remains a top priority.
