There has been a bit of a controversy ever since the Kings XI Punjab decided to hand over captaincy to Ravichander Ashwin instead of Yuvraj Singh, who remains a part of the squad.

On Monday, 26 February, the KXIP management named Ashwin as the skipper of the team in the matches of the upcoming Indian Premier League season 11.

The spinner, who was a regular for Chennai Super Kings from 2009 to 2015, was bought by KXIP for Rs 7.60 crore in the auctions in January. The Tamil Nadu bowler was part of Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017.

As questions began to mount, Virender Sehwag has now defended the decision claiming that Ashwin has the advantage of being a bowler.

“I think a bowler is a best captain,” Viru is heard saying in a video posted from the official Twitter handle of KXIP on Friday, 2 March.

“We had Yuvi in mind but most of the votes of our sports staff went to Ashwin. They might be thinking long-term. Everything depends on the year’s performance,” he said.

“Yuvi is a great friend of mine but friendship should not come in the way of cricketing decisions,” Sehwag said.

According to reports, team director Virender Sehwag and the management chose to pick Ashwin over Yuvi due to the age factor – while Yuvraj is 36, Ashwin is 31.
