Indian men’s hockey team on Saturday beat Ireland by 3-2 to start to start on a winning note in Rio Olympics 2016.

VR Raghunath gave Sreejesh’s team the early lead in the 15th minute by scoring the first goal through a penalty corner.

India nullified the short corners received by Ireland in the third quarter but Rupinder Pal Singh, again in the 27th minute scored the second goal for India.

Ireland managed to score a goal in the third quarter but Rupinder scored his second goal of the match to give India 3-1 lead.

However, Ireland tried to equalise in the fourth quarter and got so near by scoring their second goal in the dying minutes of the game.

For this victory, the credit has to be given to the Sreejesh led team who played like champions in the opening match.

India had not won an opening match at the Olympics since Sydney in 2000 where they had beaten Argentina 3-0.

And, India had last won the Olympics match in 2004.

Meanwhile, the 5th rank team India will face London Olympics gold medalist Germany on August 8.
