From the moment Chennai Super has announced the name of the players retained by them for the eleventh edition of Indian Premier League, the talk about the fate of India’s spin wizard R Ashwin in IPL have turned into a debate.

Now the former Indian head coach Anil Kumble has joined the debate. While talking at Star Sports’ analysis show “Game Plan – The Marquee List”, Kumble revealed that Indian spinner “is a captain material” and during the IPL mega auction 2018, the franchises that haven’t retained a captain yet will go after the Tamil Nadu cricketer.

Anil Kumble further added that there are high chances that CSK may not be able to get R Ashiwn unless or until they are ready to splash some money on the auction.

Earlier, CSK retained their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Rs 15 crore) along with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (Rs 7 crore) and Suresh Raina (Rs 11 crore).

While talking at the CSK’s promotional event, MS Dhoni had hinted that they will go for R Ashwin in the auction. CSK cannot even use their RTM (Right to match card) for Tamil Nadu lad as they had already retained three capped players.

“Chennai would be looking at him [Ashwin] as a spinner to backup Ravindra Jadeja, whom they have already retained. The will have to look at Ashwin as the second spinner. If that is the case, I don’t see them going beyond Rs 4 crore or Rs 5 crore. And I don’t think you will get someone like Ashwin for that amount,” Kumble said.

“He is a captain material. There are franchises which needed a captain. He is an Indian marquee player. Yes, Chennai would want their local hero to be part of Super Kings, But you never you, he might end up playing for them,” Kumble further added.

On January 21, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the list of 578 players who will go in the auction. Ashwin’s base is the highest for this season with Rs 2 crore.
