Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has lavished praise on rising Indian shuttler Ayush Shetty, calling him a “generational talent” after his sensational run to the final of the Badminton Asia Championships.
The 20-year-old produced the biggest win of his career so far, stunning World No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in a thrilling semifinal at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre on Saturday. After dropping the opening game, Ayush fought back brilliantly to register a 10-21, 21-19, 21-17 victory in a match that lasted over an hour.
Sindhu, who has trained alongside the youngster in recent weeks, did not hold back in her assessment. “I have consistently maintained that he is a generational talent. In terms of pure natural ability, he stands right up there with the very best young players I have come across,” she wrote.
Ranked 25th in the world, Ayush showed remarkable composure under pressure. After a slow start, he adjusted his approach with sharper net play and more aggressive shot-making, eventually outlasting the Paris 2024 silver medallist in a high-intensity contest.
Sindhu also offered insight into his rapid development, revealing she has observed his growth up close during training sessions under coach Irwan. She highlighted his physical attributes, particularly his reach and powerful smash, as well as his defensive instincts and ability to stay composed in long rallies.
Ayush’s journey to the final has been nothing short of extraordinary. He defeated World No. 4 Jonatan Christie in the quarterfinals, following earlier wins over World No. 7 Li Shi Feng and Chin Yu Jen.
While praising his rise, Sindhu also pointed out the importance of sustaining fitness and staying injury-free to fulfil his potential. She also lauded his attitude in training, noting his discipline and willingness to learn.
Ayush will now face China’s Shi Yuqi in the final on Sunday, with a maiden continental title within reach.
