Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals will head into the final league stage match of IPL 2026 on Sunday with uncertainty hanging over their playoff hopes and the possibility that the contest could become irrelevant even before the first ball is bowled at the Eden Gardens here.
Much of that depends on Punjab Kings’ clash against Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday. Punjab are currently ahead in the race for the final playoff berth, and a win for them would officially knock Delhi Capitals out of contention. KKR would still remain mathematically alive with a possible 15 points, but their qualification chances would then depend heavily on net run rate.
The equation is complicated for three-time champions KKR. Even if Punjab scrape past LSG by a narrow margin, Kolkata would still need a huge win over Delhi to close the gap in net run rate. An LSG victory, however, would keep both KKR and DC alive heading into Sunday.
Even then, the two teams would need Mumbai Indians to beat Rajasthan Royals earlier in the day to prevent RR from sealing the final playoff spot.
With so many results out of their control, both teams are expected to focus more on finishing their campaigns positively rather than obsessing over qualification scenarios.
KKR’s season looked in danger of collapsing midway through the tournament after injuries hit their bowling attack hard. Harshit Rana, Mustafizur Rahman, Akash Deep and Matheesha Pathirana all missed games, while Cameron Green was unable to bowl in the early stages after returning from injury.
“It was unexpected, unfamiliar territory,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore recently said.
Despite the setbacks, Kolkata recovered strongly by winning six of their last seven matches to stay alive in the race.
“Massive credit to the team. Everybody stepped up, embraced each other and pushed forward. Fingers crossed for the last game of the season,” Mysore added.
KKR, however, will miss their leading run-scorer Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who has scored 422 runs this season. There is also uncertainty around mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who has been managing a hairline fracture in his left foot.
Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, have struggled with inconsistency throughout the season. KL Rahul has carried much of the batting responsibility, scoring 533 runs at a strike rate above 171. But whenever Rahul has failed to deliver, DC’s batting has often collapsed around him.
David Miller’s return has added some stability in the middle order, but Delhi’s bowling unit has not been able to consistently support the batting effort. Captain Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav have both endured below-par seasons with the ball.
Still, Delhi will take confidence from back-to-back wins against Punjab and Rajasthan as they look to close the season strongly.
