Delhi Capitals opener Pathum Nissanka underlined the significance of the Indian Premier League for Sri Lankan cricketers, calling it a “dream opportunity” and stressing the need to make the most of every chance.

Despite Delhi’s heartbreaking one-run loss to the Gujarat Titans, Nissanka’s confident approach at the top stood out as he reflected on both the opportunity and responsibility that come with playing in the IPL.

“Every Sri Lankan desires to play in the IPL, and if somebody gets a chance, they need to play well. A couple of players aren’t playing because they are injured, but we are getting a chance, and we have to play well,” Nissanka said.

The 25-year-old played a crucial role in Delhi’s chase, scoring a brisk 41 off 24 balls, including six fours and a six, to give his side a strong start.

Chasing 211, Nissanka stitched together a 76-run opening stand with KL Rahul in just eight overs, setting the tone for the pursuit. The duo attacked aggressively during the powerplay, keeping the required rate in check early on.

“Rahul and I tried to dominate in the power play. I think that’s our game plan. We batted really well today. He shares his experience and gives me some tips on how to play in these venues. I try to do my best every time because I trust myself, I believe in it, and I go and do it,” he added.

However, despite a strong start and a late surge from David Miller, Delhi fell agonisingly short, losing by just one run in a dramatic finish.

Reflecting on the decisive moment, when Miller opted against taking a single off the penultimate delivery, Nissanka chose not to dwell on the decision.

“We haven’t discussed it yet, but sometimes it happens in cricket,” he said.

Earlier, Gujarat Titans had posted a formidable 210/4, powered by half-centuries from Shubman Gill (70), Jos Buttler (52), and Washington Sundar (55). Rashid Khan then delivered with the ball, picking up 3/17 to keep GT in control during key phases of the chase.

The narrow defeat leaves Delhi Capitals fourth on the points table with two wins from three matches, while Gujarat Titans climb to sixth after opening their account this season.
