Matías Galarza scored the fastest goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026 before Paraguay produced a spirited defensive performance with 10 men to secure a crucial 1-0 victory over Türkiye in Group D on Saturday.

Needing a response after their 4-1 defeat to the United States in the opening round, Paraguay made the perfect start when Galarza found the net just 64 seconds into the contest. The midfielder unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box that flew past the goalkeeper, breaking the tournament record set earlier in the day by Morocco’s Ismael Saibari, who had scored after 70 seconds against Scotland.

Paraguay looked in control for much of the first half and appeared on course for a comfortable evening before the match took a dramatic turn in stoppage time. Miguel Almirón was shown a straight red card following a VAR review after covering his mouth during a confrontation with Türkiye defender Mert Müldür.

The dismissal was the first issued under FIFA’s newly introduced disciplinary regulation, which mandates a red card for players who cover their mouths during on-field confrontations. The rule was implemented ahead of the tournament as part of FIFA’s efforts to improve accountability and transparency in disciplinary incidents.

Reduced to 10 men for the entire second half, Paraguay were forced into a rearguard action as Türkiye pushed relentlessly for an equaliser. The Turkish side dominated possession and territory, but Paraguay’s disciplined defensive unit repeatedly frustrated their opponents and protected the slender advantage.

Despite sustained pressure, Türkiye struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, while Paraguay remained dangerous on the counterattack whenever chances arose.

The victory represents a major turnaround for Paraguay following their heavy opening defeat and keeps their hopes of reaching the Round of 32 firmly alive heading into the final round of group-stage fixtures.

For Türkiye, however, a second consecutive defeat means their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign comes to an end, with elimination confirmed before their final Group D match. Paraguay, meanwhile, remains in the hunt for qualification as the group heads toward a decisive finish.
