The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stage begins with a blockbuster clash between Pakistan and New Zealand at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, but persistent rain threatens to play spoilsport.
Both teams arrive in the Super 8s after winning three of their four group-stage matches and have been placed in Group 2 alongside England and co-hosts Sri Lanka under the ICC’s pre-seeding system.
With crucial points at stake in a highly competitive group, even a single washout could significantly complicate the race to the semi-finals.
Weather could impact Pakistan vs New Zealand opener
Colombo’s weather forecast paints a worrying picture for the opening Super 8 fixture. There is a 75% chance of rain throughout the day, with heavy showers expected in the afternoon, potentially leaving the outfield damp even if rain eases before the scheduled 7:00 PM start.
During the match window (7:00 PM to 11:00 PM local time), the probability of rain is expected to drop to 20–27%, although light rain and thunderstorms remain possible. Temperatures are forecast to hover between 24°C and 27°C, with humidity levels exceeding 80–85%, creating sticky and challenging conditions for players.
The toss is scheduled for 6:30 PM, with the match set to begin at 7:00 PM.
ICC Rules: No Reserve day for Super 8 matches
Unlike the semi-finals and final, Super 8 fixtures do not have reserve days. If rain prevents a result, the match will be declared a No Result, with both teams sharing one point each.
For a match to be considered official, a minimum of five overs per side must be completed. Officials also have an additional 90-minute buffer beyond the scheduled end time to force a result.
A washout could prove costly in Group 2, where competition for semi-final spots is expected to be fierce.
Unseasonal rain has already impacted team preparations in Colombo. Pakistan’s training session on February 20 was cancelled due to continuous downpours, highlighting the challenging conditions in the Sri Lankan capital.
Earlier in the tournament, rain played a decisive role when the Ireland vs Zimbabwe Group B match was abandoned without a ball being bowled, a result that helped Zimbabwe qualify for the Super 8s and eliminated Australia.
