In a move to globalise the Indian Badminton League (IBL) scheduled to be held in January 2016, the Badminton Authority of India (BAI) on Thursday decided to rename IBL as Premier Badminton League (PBL).

Keeping in mind the aim to take the badminton league to another level, the BAI organising committee took the decision after much deliberation. The new name will ensure that the badminton league is no more associated with any country and it takes a global platform, a release stated.

“It was a well thought-out decision to change the name of the event at this stage,” Akhilesh Das Gupta, BAI president said, adding, “We want to see PBL take global stage with more traction from all the stakeholders. We aim to make PBL the most sought after tournament in the world of badminton.”

Most badminton associations across the world have consented to send their players for the coveted tournament despite 2016 being the Olympic year. The PBL will therefore bring together India&’s top badminton players along with international players on the same platform wherein they will showcase high-class action.

The second edition of the league will kick-start on January 2, 2016 in Mumbai with an extravagant opening ceremony and the grand finale will take place here on January 17, 2016.
