Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee conferred with lifetime membership of Mohun Bagan

Abhijit Banerjee, his wife Esther Duflo, both working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Harvard University professor Michael Kremer jointly won the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize on 14 October “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”

Nobel Prize winner Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee on Wednesday was conferred with the Life Membership of city soccer giants Mohun Bagan after club officials met him at his residence.

“Srinjoy Bose, Asst General Secretary and Debashis Dutta, Finance Secretary met Noble Laureate Abhijit V. Banerjee at his Kolkata residence at 4:00 pm and conferred him with the Life Membership of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club,” the club said in a statement.

Besides the honour, the club also handed Banerjee the First Day Cover of 1911 and the maroon green jersey with his name written on it. Meanwhile, the 58-year-old was also given the book titled “Sona e Lekha Itihase” written by Subir Mukherjee on the history of the club.

Notably, Abhijit Banerjee, his wife Esther Duflo, both working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Harvard University professor Michael Kremer jointly won the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize on 14 October “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”

The Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize to the three for their research which “has considerably improved the organisation’s ability to fight global poverty”.

Abhijit Banerjee was born in Mumbai in 1961. The 58-year-old economist studied at Calcutta University’s Presidency College and Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and then did a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1988.

Banerjee had recently said that the Indian economy is on shaky ground, adding that data currently available does not hold any assurance for the country’s economic revival anytime soon. He further said that “policies are evaluated based on accepted criteria and looked at as an option”.
