Neymar’s long road back to the FIFA World Cup finally came full circle on Wednesday as the Brazil star made an emotional return to the national team after nearly 1,000 days, helping the five-time champions seal a place in the knockout stage.

The 34-year-old forward was visibly moved when he stepped onto the pitch as a second-half substitute during Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match. Cameras captured Neymar with tears in his eyes as he made his first World Cup appearance since the 2022 tournament.

After the match, the Brazil No. 10 shared a simple but powerful message on Instagram that quickly went viral: “REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE.”

Neymar’s inclusion in Brazil’s FIFA World Cup 2026 squad had sparked debate following a lengthy battle with injuries. He was unavailable for the Selecao’s opening two group-stage matches due to a calf problem and had not featured for Brazil since suffering a devastating ACL injury during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023.

His appearance against Scotland marked another significant milestone in his recovery and his return to football’s biggest stage.

Coming on in the 76th minute in place of Matheus Cunha, Neymar made his fourth FIFA World Cup appearance, having previously represented Brazil in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions of the tournament.

Brazil ensured the occasion ended on a high with a comfortable 3-0 victory. Vinicius Junior starred with a first-half brace before Cunha added a third as the Selecao finished top of Group C and advanced to the Round of 32.

The match was also historic for Vinicius, who became the first Brazilian in 24 years to score in each of the country’s first three World Cup matches, matching a feat previously achieved by Ronaldo and Rivaldo during Brazil’s triumphant 2002 campaign.

For many Brazilian fans, however, the night’s defining image was Neymar’s emotional return — a moment nearly three years in the making and one that could yet prove pivotal as Brazil’s World Cup journey continues.
