Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri on Wednesday (18th July) dismissed all the speculation doing the rounds on internet about former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s retirement from international cricket.

MS Dhoni, who has not been in great form of late, was seen taking the match ball from the umpires after the last match of the two-nation ODI series that India lost to hosts England. His action triggered speculation that the wicketkeeper-batsman was preparing to say goodbye to ODI cricket.

Ravi Shastri, however, clarified why Dhoni took the match ball at the end of third and last match of the series played at Headingley, Leeds. “MS wanted to show the ball to Bharat Arun. He wanted to show him the wear and tear the ball had endured, to get a general idea of what the conditions were like,” Shastri told TOI, adding, “All this clamour is nonsense. He just wanted to show the ball to Arun to just have a look at it after close to 45 overs had been bowled,” he told the Times of India.

When asked if the speculations about MS Dhoni’s retirements were true, Shastri said, “That’s rubbish. MS is not going anywhere.”

Earlier, the speculations about Dhoni’s retirement from the limited overs games had set the social media ablaze. The rumours started after a video grab of the 37-year-old taking the match ball from the umpires went viral on social media.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni was booed by cricket fans at the Lord’s after his 59-ball 37 innings, in a game that India lost by 86 runs. India’s two times World Cup-winning skipper was also asked to reconsider his position in the ODI squad after he failed to take the Men-in-Blue to a respectable total in the series decider game on Tuesday.
