In a historic first, Gujarat Giants defeated Mumbai Indians in the TATA WPL 2026, ending their long-standing head-to-head jinx. Batting first at Vadodara, the Giants posted a competitive 167/4, thanks to impactful innings from Ashleigh Gardner and Sophie Devine. Despite a late charge from Mumbai, Gujarat’s bowlers held firm to secure the win, boosting their playoff hopes and marking a memorable milestone in the league’s history by winning the match by 11 runs.

Earlier, the Gujarat Giants won the toss and elected to bat first against the Mumbai Indians in today’s WPL match, something that’s happening for the first time this season.

Gujarat Giants found momentum with two consecutive wins against the UP Warriorz and Delhi Capitals, taking second place. Mumbai Indians, in third place, had a mixed season due to injuries and inconsistency but arrived after a crucial 15-run win against the RCB.

Mumbai Indians post 156/7 in losing match effort

Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur was pleased with Gujarat Giants skipper Ashleigh Gardner’s decision to bat first, saying MI would have preferred to bowl first.

Renuka Singh Thakur took the new ball for Gujarat, with Sajana Sajeevan and Hayley Matthews opening the innings for MI. Sajana looked in good touch early, striking two boundaries in the third over and continuing the momentum with more crisp shots in the next.

However, Gujarat struck an early blow as Hayley Matthews was dismissed by Sophie Devine, who claimed her 16th wicket of the TATA WPL 2026. With that, Devine regained the Purple Cap, moving ahead of Nadine de Klerk. Nat Sciver-Brunt, coming off a century in the previous game, walked in at No. 3.

MI kept finding boundaries, with Sajana smashing a six and a four off Kashvee Gautam in the sixth over. Harmanpreet Kaur soon joined her at No. 4, but Gujarat’s disciplined bowling ensured the run chase never became comfortable. In the seventh over, Devine struck again, dismissing Sciver-Brunt, caught by Anushka Sharma.

Amelia Kerr came in at No. 5 and began confidently with a boundary. Harmanpreet also found her timing, hitting two consecutive fours in the ninth, but the Giants continued to apply pressure through tight overs.

A key moment arrived in the 12th over when Georgia Wareham removed Amelia Kerr, breaking a crucial 45-run partnership. Amanjot Kaur replaced Kerr at No. 6, and the duo tried to keep MI afloat. Harmanpreet accelerated with a four and a six in the 17th over, while Amanjot also chipped in with a boundary. But Amanjot was stumped off Rajeshwari Gayakwad soon after, departing for 13 (12), ending a 44-run stand. MI were 126/5, needing 42 off 18 balls.

Sanskriti Gupta walked in at No. 7 but was quickly trapped LBW by Wareham. Poonam Khemnar followed at No. 8 as Harmanpreet launched a late counterattack, striking two fours in the 19th and two sixes in the final over. However, it wasn’t enough. Khemnar was dismissed by Ashleigh Gardner on the second-to-last ball, and despite a run from Rahila Firdous, Mumbai Indians finished on 156/7, falling short and losing the match.

Gujarat Giants posts 167/4 after early strikes

Taking an unusual decision against a Mumbai Indians side that loves chasing, Gujarat Giants skipper Ashleigh Gardner chose to bat first.

Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine opened the innings for GG, with Devine getting going early with a boundary. However, GG suffered their first blow in the third over as Mooney was dismissed by Shabnim Ismail, brilliantly caught by Sajana Sajeevan.

Anushka Sharma then walked in at No. 3 and played positively, striking two fours in the fourth over. The boundaries continued to flow as GG kept the scoreboard ticking, but Sharma’s promising knock ended in the 10th over — she hit a six and was dismissed soon after, bringing an end to a valuable 48-run partnership. Amelia Kerr was the bowler, with Ismail completing the catch.

Skipper Ashleigh Gardner arrived at No. 4, but GG were rocked again immediately as Sophie Devine was dismissed off Nat Sciver-Brunt, caught by Amelia Kerr in the 11th over. Georgia Wareham joined Gardner at No. 5, and the pair began rebuilding before switching gears in the death overs.

Gardner led the charge, finding boundaries at regular intervals and producing a stunning 16th over that included a six and four consecutive fours. She continued the momentum in the 17th, adding two more fours, while Wareham also chipped in with two boundaries.

Gardner’s counterattack finally ended in the 18th over as Amelia Kerr removed her, with Rahila Firdous taking the catch. The GG captain departed after a masterful 46 off 28 balls, with Gujarat reaching 142/4. Bharti Fulmali came in at No. 6, and Wareham finished strongly, striking two fours in the 19th over as Gujarat Giants closed their innings on 167/4.
