India could face a stronger Australian side in their final ICC women’s T20 World Cup group-stage clash at Lord’s on Sunday, with Australia coach Shelley Nitschke indicating that star batter Phoebe Litchfield is likely to return from injury for the high-stakes encounter.
Litchfield has missed Australia’s last three matches after suffering a calf injury during her match-winning innings against South Africa earlier in the tournament. Despite her absence, Australia have continued their unbeaten run in Group A and already secured a place in the knockout stages.
With the clash against India set to be Australia’s final group game, Nitschke said Litchfield is progressing well and could slot straight back into her preferred No. 3 position.
“I think Pheebs (Litchfield) is tracking really well and hopefully will be available for the India game,” Nitschke told cricket.com.au on Wednesday.
“And then, that’s going to be really tough call – Pheebs is likely to come back into that No.3 position, so then we’ve got some decisions to make on what the set-up looks like and how to structure up.
“But obviously someone has come out for her,” Nitschke added.
Litchfield’s return would strengthen Australia’s batting line-up ahead of what is expected to be a crucial contest for India in their quest to reach the semifinals.
If the left-hander returns, veteran all-rounder Ellyse Perry is likely to move back to the No. 4 position after impressing higher up the order. Perry was named Player of the Match in Australia’s recent victory over Pakistan.
The selection call could also force Australia to leave out an in-form player. Young fast bowler Lucy Hamilton is among those who could make way, while experienced all-rounder Grace Harris is also being considered for a return to the playing XI.
“She (Harris) has played at Lord’s quite a bit with the London Spirit, so she certainly throws her hat into the ring as well,” Nitschke said.
“She’s been really unlucky so we’ve certainly got some options.”
