Former India all-rounder Krishnappa Gowtham has announced his retirement from professional cricket, bringing the curtain down on a career that spanned nearly two decades across domestic and franchise cricket.
The 37-year-old made the announcement on Monday at a press conference held at the KSCA Media Lounge, in the presence of Karnataka State Cricket Association president Venkatesh Prasad, vice-president Sujith Somasundar and secretary Santosh Menon.
Gowtham’s international career was brief but memorable. He earned a solitary ODI cap for India against Sri Lanka on July 23, 2021, a match in which he also claimed his only international wicket by dismissing Minod Bhanuka.
A consistent performer on the domestic circuit, Gowtham enjoyed widespread recognition during the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made headlines at the IPL 2021 auction when Chennai Super Kings secured his services for Rs 9.25 crore, making him the most expensive uncapped Indian player at the time. That benchmark has since been surpassed, first by Avesh Khan and later by Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer at the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
Over the course of his IPL career, Gowtham represented five franchises, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow SuperGiants. His final IPL appearance came in May 2024, when he turned out for Lucknow SuperGiants against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In 36 IPL matches, the off-spinning all-rounder scored 247 runs at an impressive strike rate of 166.90 and picked up 21 wickets at an economy rate of 8.24. His contributions extended well beyond the IPL, with solid numbers across formats in domestic cricket. He finished his first-class career with 737 runs and 116 wickets from 32 matches. In List A cricket, he accumulated 400 runs and claimed 51 wickets in 32 games, while in T20s he scored 454 runs and took 32 wickets across 49 appearances.
One of the standout performances of Gowtham’s career came during the 2019 Karnataka Premier League, when representing Bellary Tuskers. In a remarkable display of all-round excellence, he smashed 134 off just 56 balls, including a 39-ball century, and then produced extraordinary bowling figures of 8 for 15 in the same match.
Gowtham also featured regularly for India A and was often on the fringes of further international selection.
