This is it! After a delayed start due to rain, bad light forced stumps on Day 1 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.

At helm, Cheteshwar Pujara (8*) and Ajinkya Rahane (0*) were fighting for India, who lost their top-order early. Sri Lanka pacer Suranga Lakmal enjoyed the day to the fullest as he claimed three big wickets in KL Rahul (0), Shikhar Dhawan (8) and Viart Kohli (0).

Rain returns to stop the play. India are 17/2 in 8.2 overs with captain Virat Kohli (0*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (8*) fighting for the hosts.

WICKET! Indian opener KL Rahul lost his wicket on the very first delivery of the Kolkata Test. Suranga Lakmal earned the breakthrough for the Lankans.

Indian openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan opened the Indian innings after a long delay due to the wet outfield at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday.

Following the routing of Australia and New Zealand in limited-overs cricket, Virat Kohli-led India start their Test campaign facing minnows Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series, starting with the Kolkata Test.

Earlier, Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal won the toss and opted to bowl first. “We will have a bowl first. Lots of moisture on the wicket, lot of grass cover as well and we need to take advantage of it,” Chandimal said after winning the toss.

Sri Lanka have decided to play six batsmen, four bowlers and a fast bowling all-rounder in the crucial Test.

As the weather forecast suggested, the skies remained overcast since morning. The drizzle kept on delaying the first Test.

“I don’t think the wicket has so many demons in it. The amount of grass cover is a factor. The surface is hard though. The spinners will come into play from day 3 onwards. First two days will be challenging for the batters,” Kohli said after the toss.

Seasoned all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will make a comeback as they carved their space in the playing eleven.
