Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during their match against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on Sunday. The IPL confirmed the penalty on Monday and also added that he has been given one Demerit Point.
The incident happened in the fifth over when Raghuvanshi was dismissed in an unusual manner. He was given out for obstructing the field, becoming only the fourth batter in IPL history to be dismissed this way. After the decision was made, the 21-year-old showed his frustration. He struck the boundary cushion with his bat in anger and then threw his helmet towards the dugout in a similar manner.
Raghuvanshi, who was out for just nine runs, was clearly unhappy with the decision. He even had a brief argument with the on-field umpires before eventually accepting the call and walking back to the pavilion. Later, the IPL released a statement explaining the reason for the punishment.
“Raghuvanshi was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to ‘abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a Match’,” the league said in a statement.
“ … Raghuvanshi struck the boundary cushion with his bat in an aggressive manner and subsequently threw his helmet into the dugout in a similar manner. Raghuvanshi admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction.”
The league further clarified the penalty in its official communication.
“Angkrish Raghuvanshi, batter & wicket-keeper, Kolkata Knight Riders, has been fined 20% of his match fee and has also accumulated one Demerit Point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials during Match No. 38 against Lucknow Super Giants,” the release added.
