Premier League giants Liverpool thrashed Swansea City 5-0 on Tuesday to reclaim fourth spot from Tottenham Hotspur but Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was unsure of when injured duo Jordan Henderson and Alberto Moreno would return to action.
“Length of time (on their returns), actually I have no idea to be honest – but it won’t be tomorrow. Both are out for the next two games for sure,” Klopp said when asked about a prospective return date for the two players at his post-match press conference.
“On December 30 and January 1, they have no chance, then we have to see again, the German tactician added as he ruled them out of Liverpool’s Premier League clashes with Leicester and Burnley.
Central midfielder Henderson limped off early on in Liverpool’s manic 3-3 draw with Arsenal on Friday night with a hamstring complaint, while fullback Moreno hurt his ankle in a UEFA Champions League win over Spartak Moscow on December 6.
In Moreno’s absence, summer recruit Andy Robertson has stepped up to the plate and the Scot’s performances have seen him win universal praise but if skipper Henderson is out for a prolonged period, the Reds are bound to suffer.
For the midfielder is crucial to Klopp’s system and while the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can have done an admirable job, tougher tests than Swansea are in store for the Reds.
Leicester City, who have recovered some of their swagger under Claude Puel, visit Anfield on Saturday before Klopp’s men make a trip to giant-killers Burnley just two days later.
Liverpool next take on Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup on January 5 before hosting Premier League leaders Manchester City on January 15 but it remains to be seen whether the injured duo will be able to recover in time for the crunch clashes.
