Liverpool slumped to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle on Sunday and their manager Jurgen Klopp was in a rueful mood in the post-match conference, blaming his players’ profligacy for the result which saw them drop to seventh in the Premier League table.

“Yes, for today of course it feels not too cool as you can imagine,” Klopp said.

“We do it the other way around. We are the better team again, we create more chances again, we are in very promising situations and then we don’t score.

“That’s of course a problem but it will not stay like this. I know, I’m long enough around football to know that there will be one day when the knot opens and maybe then we’ll score more times than once, that’s pretty likely,” Klopp asserted as he put up a brave face after his side’s third draw of the season.

Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge were guilty of missing some gilt-edged chances during the draw at St James’ Park, which saw former manager Rafael Benitez come up against his former employers for the first time in the Premier League.

The international break comes at the right time for the Reds, who won just one game in September and they will have to pick themselves up, as their arch-rivals Manchester United come visiting on October 14.

And Klopp will hope that his players bring their shooting boots for the crunch clash at Anfield as he nears his two-year anniversary of being in charge of the storied club.
