England speedster Jofra Archer, who made his Test debut in the 2nd match of the Ashes 2019, has arguably bowled one of the most intimidating spells of pace bowling in recent times. Archer bowled 29 overs on Day 4 and regularly hit 145 kmph with ease, involving an engrossing battle with the prolific Steve Smith, where the latter also had to bear the brunt of the former’s brutal pace.

Smith was batting on 80 from 152 balls when in the 77th over a delivery by Archer hit him on the unprotected part of the neck. The medics ran into the middle from both sides, as the England players rushed to the former Aussie skipper immediately.

However, footages showed Archer smiling while Smith was being tended to. And this has left many people on social media steaming, although it has to be noted that those visuals were being shown when Smith had recovered and was starting to walk off. Interestingly, England’s Jos Buttler, with whom Archer seemed to be sharing the joke, was the first man to come to Smith’s aid after the latter collapsed.

“6 short balls in an over and a half. Where did you think this was going to end up Archer? And you’re cracking up laughing. S**t Bloke,” tweeted a cricket fan.

Another fan said: “Disrespectful @JofraArcher behaviour. Hope you breakdown and have others laughing at you.”

Fans also pointed out that Archer was not checking on Smith.

“Jofra Archer not checking on Steve Smith after the nasty blow on the latter’s neck but laughing instead, says a lot about him as a sportsman. I hope he gets a taste of his own medicine soon. Archer, on the rader now,” read a tweet.

Though Smith retired hurt at the very moment he was being hit, he later came back to continue his innings to score 92 runs before getting out on the ball of Chris Woakes.
