India batter Shreyas Iyer has resumed training, a month after suffering a serious spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, when he landed awkwardly on his left side while attempting a diving catch.

Initial scans in Sydney detected internal bleeding, following which Iyer was rushed to a hospital and admitted to the ICU, where he remained under the close supervision of BCCI medical staff and local specialists. Doctors subsequently carried out a minor surgical procedure to control the bleeding, allowing his condition to stabilise.

Although discharged earlier this month, Iyer stayed back in Sydney for routine follow-up evaluations before flying home. He later assured fans that he is “getting better every passing day.”

In a promising sign of recovery, Iyer on Monday shared a story on social media of himself working out on an exercise bike, signalling a cautious return to physical activity. Since landing in India, he has been under the regular medical care of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.

The middle-order batter was expectedly not considered for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa, beginning November 30. Medical experts estimate a minimum two-month recovery timeline for spleen-related injuries, given the organ’s critical role in blood filtration and immune support, which makes premature return particularly risky.

Ahead of the Australia tour, Iyer was appointed vice-captain of the ODI squad, with Shubman Gill taking over as captain in October. Rohit Sharma, the former ODI captain, travelled as an opening batter, as the team management backed Gill to lead the build-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Iyer, who will sit out the eight-match white-ball series in South Africa, is expected to regain full fitness in time for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand at home in January next year.
