Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand delivered a standout performance to help Iran earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Belgium in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G clash at the Los Angeles Stadium on Monday.

The result leaves both teams still searching for their first victory of the tournament after two matches, setting up a dramatic final round of group fixtures with qualification to the Round of 32 still up for grabs.

While the scoreline remained unchanged, both goalkeepers played pivotal roles in a match packed with chances at either end.

Belgium controlled possession for large periods and created the majority of opportunities, but Beiranvand repeatedly came to Iran’s rescue. The Iranian goalkeeper denied efforts from Youri Tielemans and Maxim De Cuyper and remained composed under sustained Belgian pressure throughout the contest.

At the other end, Belgium captain Thibaut Courtois was equally influential. The veteran shot-stopper produced a brilliant reflex save to deny Hossein Kanaani in the first half and later thwarted Mehdi Taremi as Iran looked to strike on the counterattack.

Belgium dominated but failed to capitalise

The Red Devils began brightly, with Kevin De Bruyne pulling the strings in midfield. The Manchester City playmaker fired wide from distance before combining with Leandro Trossard to carve out Belgium’s first clear opening.

Despite enjoying most of the ball, Belgium struggled to convert possession into goals. Tielemans came closest before halftime when his well-struck effort forced another excellent save from Beiranvand.

Iran, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the break. Taremi thought he had given Team Melli the lead midway through the first half, only for his finish to be ruled out for offside following a neatly worked set-piece routine.

Red card adds to Belgium’s frustration

Belgium increased the tempo after the break and introduced fresh legs through Hans Vanaken, Dodi Lukebakio and Timothy Castagne in search of a breakthrough.

However, their task became significantly harder in the 66th minute when centre-back Nathan Ngoy received a straight red card. After misplacing a back pass, Ngoy brought down an Iranian attacker who was through on goal, leaving the referee with little choice but to send him off.

Reduced to ten men, Belgium were forced to rely on Courtois, who produced several important interventions to preserve the clean sheet.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Belgium continued to push forward in the closing stages. Substitute Matias Fernandez-Pardo injected pace into the attack, while Lukebakio saw a curling effort drift narrowly wide.

The final whistle confirmed a frustrating evening for Rudi Garcia’s side, who have now drawn both of their opening Group G matches.

“We lacked efficiency up front,” Garcia said after the match. “We hit the target, but we didn’t test the goalkeeper enough. Playing with ten men didn’t help either.”

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku echoed his manager’s frustration.

“We have to analyse what went wrong because we created so many chances without scoring, and that’s frustrating,” he said.

Iran celebrate Beiranvand’s heroics

Following the result, Iran’s state news agency IRNA paid tribute to Beiranvand on social media, sharing an image depicting the goalkeeper protecting the Strait of Hormuz.

The post referenced a pre-tournament promise made by the goalkeeper that Iran’s goal would remain “as sealed as the Strait of Hormuz” during the World Cup.

After keeping Belgium at bay for 90 minutes, Beiranvand lived up to that promise with one of the standout goalkeeping displays of the tournament so far.

Belgium opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Egypt, while Iran shared the points in a 2-2 draw with New Zealand. The latest stalemate means every team in Group G remains in contention heading into the final round of matches.

On June 26, Belgium will face New Zealand in Vancouver, while Iran takes on Egypt in Seattle. With qualification scenarios still unresolved, both matches are set to play a decisive role in determining who advances to the knockout stages.

“We don’t want to go home,” Lukaku said. “We want to go as far as possible and put ourselves in the best possible position. Let’s go for it.”
