IPL 2026: SRH bank on young guns even as CSK look for first away win in southern derby

Buoyed by the emergence of two exciting pace prospects who have added fresh energy and balance to their setup, Sunrisers Hyderabad head into their clash against five-time champions Chennai Super Kings in Hyderabad on Saturday with renewed confidence.

From a team perspective, SRH have found a new spark in uncapped pacers Praful Hinge and Sakib Husain, who were drafted in place of experienced campaigners Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat. The move paid immediate dividends as the duo ripped through the Rajasthan Royals top order, reducing them to 9 for 5 inside the first three overs and setting up a commanding win.

Hinge, the 24-year-old from Vidarbha, has quickly established himself as a key weapon in SRH’s bowling attack. His ability to generate bounce from a back-of-a-length and attack early was on full display as he dismantled a strong batting line-up featuring Dhruv Jurel, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Riyan Parag, finishing with figures of 4/34.

Alongside him, Husain, an unheralded 21-year-old from Bihar, complemented the effort perfectly. Using clever variations in the middle overs, he also picked up four wickets as Rajasthan were bowled out for 159 in pursuit of 216. From a team standpoint, this dual impact has addressed one of SRH’s early-season concerns around their pace attack.

With their bowling now showing greater depth, SRH’s already formidable batting unit, comprising Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen, appears even more balanced. The team will look to build on this momentum and apply sustained pressure on CSK.

From SRH’s perspective, targeting CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad could be crucial, given his struggles for runs this season, with a highest score of just 28 in five innings.

However, CSK arrived with momentum of their own. The five-time champions have recovered from a sluggish start to register back-to-back wins, showing resilience despite key absences. Sanju Samson has rediscovered his touch, playing a central role in their revival with an unbeaten century against Delhi Capitals followed by a solid contribution against Kolkata Knight Riders.

With Gaikwad still searching for rhythm, CSK could consider reshuffling their batting order, possibly promoting young Ayush Mhatre, who has impressed with consistent performances.

CSK, however, continue to deal with injury setbacks. The absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Nathan Ellis has already stretched their resources, and the loss of left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed to a quadriceps injury further weakens their pace attack. This could open opportunities for Mukesh Choudhary and Ramakrishna Ghosh to step in and strengthen the bowling unit.

SRH, having bounced back strongly after a shaky start, will look to capitalise on home conditions, while CSK aim to continue their upward trajectory and secure their first away win of the season. Both teams are aware of the importance of contributions from uncapped players in maintaining balance under IPL regulations, making the performances of emerging talents a key factor in this contest.

Historically, CSK held the edge in this rivalry, winning 15 of the 22 encounters compared to SRH’s seven victories. However, current form and team balance suggest a closely fought contest.
Conditions in Hyderabad are expected to be hot and humid, with dew likely to play a role in the second innings. The surface is expected to be batting-friendly, offering some assistance to pacers early on but largely favouring high-scoring encounters, with chasing teams likely to have an advantage.
