With no second chances left in the tournament, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will lock horns in a high-pressure Eliminator in Mullanpur on Wednesday, as the race for the Indian Premier League 2026 title enters its knockout stage.

While Rajasthan arrive riding on the fearless batting of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sunrisers Hyderabad head into the contest with momentum and a destructive batting unit that has powered their late surge this season. With a place in Qualifier 2 at stake, both sides will bank heavily on their explosive top orders to deliver in what promises to be another high-scoring clash.

Sunrisers Hyderabad recovered strongly after a slow start to the season and won five of their last seven league matches after the return of captain Pat Cummins. SRH also carry a psychological advantage into the Eliminator after beating Rajasthan Royals twice during the league stage.

Rajasthan, meanwhile, only secured their playoff place on the final day of the league phase. Led by Riyan Parag, RR will now look to continue that momentum in the knockouts.

The batting strength of both sides has been the biggest talking point this season. Rajasthan’s top order has revolved around Sooryavanshi, who has scored 583 runs, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel have added 397 and 458 runs respectively.

SRH have been equally dangerous with Abhishek Sharma scoring 563 runs, Ishan Kishan making 569 and Travis Head contributing 393. Heinrich Klaasen has also enjoyed his best IPL season so far with 606 runs in the middle order.

Despite the firepower, both Jaiswal and Head have struggled for consistency at times and the Eliminator presents them with the perfect stage to produce a match-winning innings. RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara admitted that stopping SRH’s aggressive batting line-up would be a major challenge.

“They’re a good side, aren’t they? They bat well. They trust themselves to go hard and they’ve done it the whole tournament. We have got to hold the line, really. Be disciplined and understand that they’re not a side that you’re going to limit to 120, 130. But we’ve got to be aggressive (with our) lines and lengths.

“Even if you’re trying to bowl a good length ball, or a slower ball, it has to be bowled with intent. With the Sunrisers, yeah, it’s going to be a tough clash for us. Let’s see in two days’ time what we come up with,” Sangakkara said.

The inaugural IPL champions will once again depend heavily on England quick Jofra Archer, who has taken 21 wickets this season and delivered a crucial spell in RR’s must-win game against Mumbai Indians. Nandre Burger and Brijesh Sharma have also chipped in at important moments.

Young spinner Yash Raj Punja has emerged as RR’s lead spin option ahead of Ravi Bishnoi, while veteran Ravindra Jadeja will need to contribute more consistently.

For SRH, Cummins, leading wicket-taker Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain will spearhead the bowling attack. Young wrist-spinner Shivang Kumar has also impressed during the middle overs.

The Mullanpur surface has largely favoured batters this season, with teams crossing the 220-run mark in three of the four league matches played at the venue. Historically too, SRH have enjoyed the upper hand in this rivalry, winning 14 of the 23 IPL meetings between the two sides, including the last five in a row.

But knockout cricket often has little room for history. On Wednesday, it will come down to which side handles the pressure better, with the winner earning a shot against the loser of Qualifier 1 for a place in the IPL 2026 final.
