A major controversy erupted during the Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 clash against the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium after Mitchell Santner was replaced by Shardul Thakur as a concussion substitute, a move that quickly sparked debate over the legitimacy of the decision.

The incident unfolded during MI’s heavy 103-run defeat, their biggest loss in IPL history, with questions raised around both the nature of Santner’s injury and whether the substitution followed proper protocol.

Santner had earlier taken a diving catch to dismiss Kartik Sharma but appeared to injure his shoulder in the process. However, when Shardul Thakur walked out to bat as a concussion substitute, it led to widespread scrutiny.

Addressing the situation post-match, head coach Mahela Jayawardene clarified that the New Zealand all-rounder had also experienced symptoms consistent with a possible concussion.

“I think he hit his head first, neck, obviously the shoulder as well. He went for a scan because once he got back, he felt dizzy. So, he was lying down. Yes, the ice was there for the shoulder. But he felt that he wasn’t stable. So, we took him for a scan in that situation. We requested (for a concussion substitute).”

“Obviously, it is at the match referee and the umpire’s discretion. They allowed Shardul. Mitch will be disappointed that his batting powers are matched to Shardul Thakur. But it is what it is. But hopefully, it’s not too bad,” Jayawardene said in a post-match press conference.

Why the substitution sparked controversy

The decision to bring in Shardul Thakur as a concussion substitute for Mitchell Santner quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the match.

The debate centred on two key aspects, whether the move strictly followed concussion protocols and whether Thakur qualified as a like-for-like replacement. Under IPL regulations, concussion substitutes are permitted only in cases involving a head or neck impact and must be approved after medical evaluation and match referee clearance.

In Santner’s case, the on-field visuals suggested a shoulder injury, while the substitution request was reportedly based on symptoms like dizziness. The situation drew further scrutiny as he was later seen receiving treatment for his shoulder in the dressing room.

As per guidelines set by the International Cricket Council, a player can be replaced if a concussion is confirmed or even suspected. This can occur immediately after the incident, following on-field or off-field assessments, or later if symptoms develop after the player has returned to play.

The overlap between visible physical discomfort and reported neurological symptoms has led to divided opinions, fuelling debate around the decision.

On the field, Chennai Super Kings delivered a commanding performance, posting 207/6 after a sensational 101 off 54 balls from Sanju Samson.

Mumbai Indians never recovered in the chase and were bowled out for just 104. Akeal Hosein starred with figures of 4/17, while Noor Ahmad and others chipped in to seal a massive 103-run victory, CSK’s biggest win by runs in IPL history.
