Kolkata Knight Riders’ early-season struggles continued as their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash against Punjab Kings was abandoned due to persistent rain at Eden Gardens on Monday.

KKR had won the toss and elected to bat first, but their decision quickly backfired as they slipped to 25/2 in just 3.4 overs before the weather intervened.

A steady drizzle soon turned into a prolonged downpour, forcing the umpires to take the players off the field. Ground staff swiftly covered the pitch, square and run-up areas, but with rain continuing well past the cut-off time, the match was eventually called off. Both teams were forced to share points.

Before the interruption, Punjab Kings were firmly in control thanks to an incisive spell from Xavier Bartlett. The pacer struck twice in quick succession inside the power play to put KKR under immediate pressure.

Finn Allen was the first to depart, edging an attempted big shot after Bartlett consistently targeted the channel outside off stump. Cameron Green followed soon after for just 4, nicking behind while chasing another probing delivery.

At the time of the stoppage, skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi were at the crease, with KKR in early trouble. The three-time champions were also without key spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, further highlighting their challenges this season.

For KKR, the abandoned game means their search for a first win in IPL 2026 continues. Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, will feel unlucky not to capitalise on their strong start, having been in a commanding position before the rain interruption.

The contrast between the two sides remains evident as KKR are still looking for stability and rhythm, while PBKS continue to show signs of a well-settled and confident unit. However, on a rain-hit evening in Kolkata, the weather had the final say.
