Sunrisers Hyderabad booked their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs with a composed five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, chasing down 181 with an over to spare in a high-pressure clash that ended CSK’s hopes of a late surge.
In a contest billed as a virtual knockout, SRH held their nerve far better than the hosts, with Ishan Kishan anchoring the chase brilliantly through an unbeaten 70 off 47 deliveries. Heinrich Klaasen’s explosive 47 and a calm finishing effort from Smaran Ravichandran ensured Hyderabad crossed the line at 181/5 in 19 overs to officially seal qualification.
For Chennai, the defeat marked another frustrating chapter in an inconsistent campaign that never truly found stability despite flashes of promise throughout the season.
Earlier in the evening, CSK chose to bat first after winning the toss and started with intent despite the absence of MS Dhoni, who missed the game due to fitness concerns.
Sanju Samson immediately lifted the tempo, smashing boundaries from the opening over and racing to 27 off just 13 balls before Pat Cummins delivered the first breakthrough.
Youngster Urvil Patel briefly continued the momentum with a pair of sixes, but SRH quickly pulled things back through disciplined middle-overs bowling. Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to accelerate during his stay, managing only 15 off 21 balls as Hyderabad steadily tightened control.
Just when Chennai risked slipping below a competitive total, Dewald Brevis injected life back into the innings with a fearless counterattack. The South African batter targeted the pace bowlers and struck four sixes in a fluent 44 off 27 balls, while Shivam Dube added a useful 26 to help CSK recover.
Brevis’ assault briefly shifted momentum towards the home side, particularly during a crucial phase where CSK scored freely against Nitish Kumar Reddy and Pat Cummins. However, SRH’s bowlers executed strongly at the death to restrict Chennai to 180/7 instead of allowing a late surge beyond 190.
Cummins once again led from the front with figures of 3/28, becoming the standout performer with the ball. Sakib Hussain chipped in with two wickets, while Eshan Malinga and Praful Hinge picked up one each.
The chase began aggressively for Hyderabad as Travis Head attacked early before falling to Mukesh Choudhary. Abhishek Sharma kept the pressure on CSK’s bowlers alongside Kishan, helping SRH maintain momentum through the Powerplay.
While Akeal Hosein removed Abhishek to offer Chennai a brief opening, Kishan remained unfazed and steadily took control of the chase. Klaasen then turned the game decisively in SRH’s favour with a brutal 47 off 26 balls, taking on both pace and spin with ease before being stumped off Noor Ahmad.
Even after Nitish Kumar Reddy departed late in the innings, SRH never looked under serious pressure. Kishan continued to rotate strike smartly and punished loose deliveries before Smaran Ravichandran sealed the victory with the winning boundary in the 19th over.
The win not only secured Sunrisers Hyderabad a playoff berth but also reinforced their credentials as one of the most balanced sides in the competition heading into the knockout stages.
