Sunrisers Hyderabad have brought in Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for injured David Payne for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2026, strengthening their pace attack midway through the campaign.
Coetzee, the South Africa fast-bowling all-rounder, joins the franchise for Rs 2 crore. He replaces Payne, who was ruled out with an ankle injury after featuring in just two matches, conceding 70 runs across five overs. Payne himself had been drafted in earlier as a replacement for Jack Edwards, who withdrew before the start of the season due to a foot injury.
The addition of Coetzee comes as SRH continue to reshuffle their squad following a series of injury setbacks. The team had already lost Brydon Carse to a hand injury sustained during a net session, prompting the signing of Sri Lankan left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka as a replacement.
Coetzee arrives with prior IPL experience, having represented Mumbai Indians in 2024, where he picked up 13 wickets in 10 matches, and Gujarat Titans in 2025, claiming two wickets in four games. He was last seen in action during South Africa’s T20I series in New Zealand, where he delivered a standout performance of 3 for 31 in one of the matches.
Despite the injury concerns, SRH have received a timely boost with captain Pat Cummins cleared to rejoin the squad after undergoing scans on his back in Sydney. Having missed the start of the season, Cummins is expected to return to action soon, with a possible comeback lined up against Rajasthan Royals on April 25.
