India vs New Zealand, 3rd ODI: Kohli’s century not enough as New Zealand seal 41-run win

New Zealand sealed the victory after India were bowled out for 296, making it their first-ever bilateral ODI series win on Indian soil. The Kiwis’ disciplined bowling and amazing fielding made the difference, with key dismissals at crucial moments. India fought hard, but ultimately couldn’t match New Zealand’s total and went down by 41 runs.

Virat Kohli’s century, 124 off 108 balls, featuring 10 fours and three sixes, powered India past the 300-run mark. Half-centuries from Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy provided solid support, allowing Kohli to anchor the innings. However, late wickets proved decisive and swung the momentum back in New Zealand’s favour.

New Zealand posted 337/8, powered by back-to-back centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips. Mitchell scored his second consecutive century of the series, making 137 off 131 balls, with 15 fours and 3 sixes. His previous century came in the 2nd ODI on January 14 in Rajkot, where he scored 131 off 119 balls*.

Phillips, meanwhile, smashed 106 off 88 balls, and the pair stitched together a massive 219-run partnership off 188 balls. Their stand helped New Zealand recover and put crucial scores on the board.

It’s a small ground, the pitch was a bit two-paced, the plan was to put on a partnership and give ourselves a chance. There was a certain stage around the 30th overs where I was a bit edgy, but playing with Mitchell gives you a lot of confidence, he was striking the ball well and that took the pressure off me. But you can take your time in an ODI, take it deeper and then play your shots. We were looking at 280 during the 25th over, they bowled really well in the middle overs, we are happy to take 337. There was a bit in it when Jadeja was bowling (if there was turn), hopefully, we can exploit it and get some turn in the second innings.”
