England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to bat against India in the opening ODI of the three-match series at Edgbaston on Monday, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to India’s playing XI.
The match marked a major milestone for England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler, who became only the second English cricketer after Eoin Morgan (225 ODIs) to feature in 200 One-Day Internationals. Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson also made his 50th international appearance across formats, while fast bowler Josh Tongue earned his ODI debut.

Captains’ take at toss
England captain Harry Brook: “We’ll have a bat today. It looks like a good surface , not sure exactly how it will play, but we fancy our chances to bat well and hopefully see some spin in the second innings. The key is to assess conditions as quickly as possible. Having similar players across both T20Is and ODIs brings confidence for me as captain and for the team. We’ve struggled over the last couple of years, but this is a chance to turn the page, and I believe we have the side to do that. We’ve gone with two spinners and three seamers, aiming for balance in the attack and adaptability to whatever the wicket offers.”
India captain Shubman Gill: “Actually, we were looking to bowl first. Most of the boys have been playing the T20s, while the rest got a bit of rest. We had some training and arrived a couple of days earlier, so we’ve been practicing. The environment and vibe in the camp have been really good. This is an important series for us, especially with the 2027 World Cup in mind. The conditions here are a little more similar to South Africa compared to what we usually get in India. That makes it valuable to try different combinations and give players with less experience in this format some game time. It’s great to have the senior players back, Virat Bhai, Rohit Bhai, KL, and Boom. Their experience is going to be massive for us.”
