Young Indian batsman Prithvi Shaw has been ruled out of the first Test against Australia due to an ankle injury he sustained during a warm-up game against Australia XI. The warmup match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

The incident took place during Australia’s innings. In the 15th over of the game when Aussie cricketer Max Bryant hit Ravichandran Ashwin’s delivery for a six at midwicket. Prithvi Shaw managed to catch the ball, he later spilled the chance while tumbling over the ropes. Shaw also twisted his ankle while trying to catch the ball.

Giving an update on Shaw’s injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a tweet: “Update: The medical team is assessing Prithvi Shaw at the moment. He hurt his left ankle while attempting to take a catch at the boundary ropes. Shaw is being taken to the hospital for scans #TeamIndia”.

Prithvi Shaw was in good form in the practice match against CA XI as he scored a brilliant half-century and was expected to open India’s batting in the first Test starting on December 6.

India is slated to play a four-match Test series against Australia. Virat Kohli’s side is firm favourites to win the Test series mainly due to the absence of star Aussie duo Steve Smith and David Warner. Smith and Warner are currently out of the Australia squad due to a one-year ban by Cricket Australia in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal that took place in South Africa earlier this year.
