The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced the 12-member squad for the opening Test match between India and Australia starting on Thursday, 6 December. The first of four-match Test series will be played at the Adelaide Oval.

Rohit Sharma, who is also India’s vice-captain in ODIs, has been included in the 12-member squad along with Hanuma Vihari. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav are among the notable players who have not been named in the 12-member squad.

Chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav will also warm the bench as India have decided to go with lone spinner R Ashwin.

BCCI took to Twitter to announce India’s 12-member squad or first Test. It posted, “Team India’s 12 for the 1st Test against Australia in Adelaide: Virat Kohli (C), A Rahane (VC), KL Rahul, M Vijay, C Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Hanuma Vihari, R Pant (WK), R Ashwin, M Shami, I Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah #TeamIndia #AUSvIND.”

Meanwhile, speaking to the media ahead of the opening Test, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane said the players had learnt the importance of contributing to the team from India’s last trip to Australia.

“When you do well as a team, you feel really good,” Rahane said, adding, “This is a team sport … and it is the job of each and every bat to contribute for the team. And I think it’s important that we get those long partnerships together, in Australia that will really help us a lot.”
