India’s opening pair of KL Rahul (18*) and Murali Vijay (2*) were cruising for India at Tea as the hosts reach 20 for no loss, trailing Australia by 431 runs in the third Test at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi on Friday.

Earlier, Australian captain Steve Smith and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell struck emphatic knocks to help the visitors reach a comfortable total.

Smith smashed unbeaten 178 runs, while Maxwell scored a causative 104-run knock as Australia were wrapped up for 451 runs in their first innings.

Smith was the first Aussie captain and fifth overseas captain to score a 150-plus knock in India. Earlier West Indies’ Clive Lloyd and England’s Alastair Cook had done it thrice and twice respectively.

For India, orthodox spinner Ravindra Jadeja led the bowling attack as he claimed a five-wicket haul, while pacer Umesh Yadav supported him, claiming three big wickets.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Shaun Marsh (2) to join the bowling assault.
