The first day of the first Test match between India and West Indies saw Indian batsmen completely dominating the visitors as the home team finished the day with being securely placed at 364 for 4.

Earlier, Kohli won the toss and opted to bat at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot.

India started on a poor note as opener KL Rahul departed in the very first over without troubling the scorers. Debutant Prithvi Shaw and local boy Cheteshwar Pujara’s partnership didn’t give any chance to the West Indies and the two dominated the bowlers from the beginning.

Pujara and Shaw added 206 runs for the second wicket. Shaw, the 18-year-old opener, brought up his maiden hundred of just 99 balls. Pujara’s contribution of 86 runs along with Shaw’s ton laid the foundation for a big score.

Indian Captain Virat Kohli was at the crease on 72 with Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant on 17 at the end of Day 1. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, who made 41, put on 105 runs for the third wicket after Prithvi Shaw departed scoring an impressive 134 runs. Shaw became the youngest Indian to achieve the feat on debut.

Kohli looked well set for another ton and Pant also looked solid. Eighty-nine overs were bowled on day one with India scoring at 4.08 runs per over.

West Indies is playing without their regular Captain Jason Holder. Kraigg Brathwaite is leading the side in his absence.

Barring Seamer Shanon Gabriel (1/66), none of the bowlers troubled the Indian batsmen on a greenish surface which did not seem to offer much support.
