Under intense pressure after their 76-run drubbing by South Africa in the Super Eight opener, India roared back in dominant style, unleashing a relentless six-hitting barrage to knock Zimbabwe out of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.

The defending champions smashed 17 sixes on their way to a commanding 256/4, the highest total of the competition, quelling concerns over their underperforming top order.

They then tightened the screws with the ball, restricting Zimbabwe to 184/6, despite Brian Bennett’s fighting unbeaten 97, to seal a comprehensive 72-run victory that significantly boosted their Net Run Rate and kept their semifinal hopes alive.

Having lost an opener inside the first over in each of their previous five outings, the pressure was firmly on India after being asked to bat at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

What followed was a dramatic course correction. India rode a collective batting effort, inclusive of explosive half centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya to comfortably post in excess of 250.

In reply, Zimbabwe never quite found the required tempo, despite a valiant effort from opener Bennett, who finished heartbreakingly three runs short of a deserved century.

Comeback man Axar Patel needed just two deliveries to provide India their first breakthrough, removing Tadiwanashe Marumani (20), before Varun Chakravarthy struck soon after to dismiss the newly arrived Dion Myers (6).

Bennett and captain Sikandar Raza (31) briefly reignited hopes with a spirited counterattack, stitching together a brisk 72-run partnership. However, Arshdeep Singh’s return for a second spell at the death turned the tide decisively. He first ended Raza’s resistance and, two balls later, sent Ryan Burl back for a duck. Arshdeep then added Tony Munyonga (11) to his tally to cap off a decisive spell.

Bennett, who brought up a 34-ball half-century, continued to wage a lone battle, eventually finishing unbeaten on 97 off 59 balls, studded with eight fours and six sixes. But with little support from the other end, his heroic knock proved insufficient as India sealed the contest in emphatic fashion.

Earlier, the return of Sanju Samson at the top alongside Abhishek Sharma signalled a shift in approach. Samson, greeted by loud cheers in Chennai, set to be his IPL base next season, repaid the faith with a brisk 24 off 15 balls, including two towering sixes. His intent ensured India registered their best opening stand (48) of the tournament.

At the other end, Abhishek, who headed into the match, with just 15 runs in four previous innings, began cautiously before expanding his range. The left-hander grew in assurance, targeting the change bowlers and bringing up a fluent 55 off 30 balls, his first half-century of the campaign.

The 25-year-old took particular toll on Titotenda Maposa, hammering 23 runs in one over before the medium pacer eventually claimed his wicket with a clever off-cutter.

Samson’s dismissal to Blessing Muzarabani did little to disrupt the tempo. Ishan Kishan walked in with clear intent, racing to 38 as India capitalised on sloppy Zimbabwean fielding.

By the end of the powerplay, the defending champions had surged past 80, laying the foundation for a massive total. The 72-run partnership between Abhishek and Kishan was finally broken by captain Sikandar Raza, but the momentum firmly belonged to India.

Zimbabwe’s fielding lapses continued to aid India’s cause as captain Suryakumar Yadav (33) fully capitalised on a dropped chance, smoking a couple of sixes and three boundaries to add 25 off next eight balls.

With India looking set for a total well over 200, Abhishek’s controlled innings was eventually undone by a smart off-cutter from Maposa, bringing much-needed relief for the medium pacer.

Even after Abhishek’s departure at 150/3 in the 13th over, India showed no signs of slowing. Hardik Pandya, promoted to inject late acceleration, wasted no time, launching Ryan Burl for a second-ball six.

The finishing flourish, however, came from Pandya and Tilak Varma. Tilak announced himself with a boundary off his first delivery and soon shifted into overdrive.

The pair tore into the final overs, adding an unbeaten 84 runs for the fifth wicket in a breathtaking display of clean hitting. Hardik cleared the fence twice consecutively to eventually finish unbeaten on 50 off 23 balls, while Tilak’s 44 off just 16 balls provided the explosive edge India had been craving.

Brief Scores: India 256/4 (Abhishek Sharma 55, Hardik Pandya 50 not out, Tilak Varma 44 not out; Sikandar Raza 1/29) beat Zimbabwe 184/6 (Brian Bennett 97 not out; Sikandar Raza 31; Arshdeep Singh 3/24, Axar Patel 1/35) by 72 runs.
