Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will look to strengthen their position in the IPL 2026 playoffs race when they take on an out-of-form Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday.

The afternoon clash at the picturesque venue is expected to draw massive attention, largely because of Virat Kohli, who heads into the game after scoring a century in RCB’s previous outing.

Large numbers of fans have already travelled from Delhi and Punjab to watch Kohli bat against the backdrop of the Dhauladhar mountain range, with the city’s limited infrastructure coming under heavy pressure because of the rush.

RCB have been one of the most consistent teams this season and head into the contest as favourites against a Punjab side that has lost five consecutive matches after dominating the first half of the tournament.

While RCB are comfortably placed on the points table, another defeat for Punjab Kings would almost end the playoff hopes of the Shreyas Iyer-led side. Punjab’s biggest concern has been their bowling attack, which has repeatedly failed to defend strong totals. In both matches played in Dharamsala this season, PBKS were unable to protect scores of 210 and 200 after losing control in the final overs.

In fact, Punjab Kings now hold the unwanted record of losing the most IPL matches after posting totals in excess of 200. The team may now be forced to rethink its bowling combination, with overseas pacers Xavier Bartlett and Marco Jansen struggling for consistency and proving expensive through the season.

Arshdeep Singh managed to improve his economy rate with a disciplined spell in the previous game, while Azmatullah Omarzai impressed immediately with both bat and ball in his first appearance of the season.

Punjab could also consider bringing back Vijaykumar Vyshak in search of better control during the middle and death overs. Although the batting unit has generally performed well this season, Punjab’s recent slide has been driven mainly by bowling failures.

The pitch in Dharamsala has provided assistance to seam bowlers so far and also played slightly slower during the recent Mumbai Indians-Punjab Kings fixture.

RCB, meanwhile, have looked like one of the most balanced sides in the competition. Kohli continues to deliver consistently even at the age of 37 and recently smashed a 60-ball 105 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur.

RCB’s pace attack, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, is also expected to enjoy the helpful conditions in Dharamsala.

“We have played well in the tournament and I think everyone came in the different stage and doing (well) for the team. I think that’s a great sign. And being at the top of the table, it’s always a good thing. Good for the team. And as I said, we are taking just one game at a time, one step at a time,” said captain Rajat Patidar.

With pressure mounting on Punjab Kings, RCB will back themselves to deliver another disciplined performance, while much of the crowd is expected to rally behind Kohli once again.
