The United States became the second team to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia in Group D on Friday (local time).

After opening their campaign with a 4-1 win over Paraguay, Mauricio Pochettino’s side delivered another assured performance in Seattle to move to six points from two matches and continue their unbeaten start to the tournament.

The hosts took the lead in the 11th minute when Australia defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned Folarin Balogun’s cut-back into his own net. The Monaco striker, who scored twice in the opening match, was again heavily involved as the Americans applied early pressure.

The United States doubled their advantage before halftime through defender Alex Freeman. Initially flagged offside, the goal was awarded after a VAR review confirmed Freeman had headed home following a deflected effort from Sergino Dest after a corner.

Australia, buoyed by their opening-match victory over Türkiye, struggled to match the intensity and physicality of the hosts in the first half. Head coach Tony Popovic responded with several changes after the break, introducing Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe in an attempt to spark a comeback.

The Socceroos improved in the second half and enjoyed more possession in attacking areas but failed to create enough clear-cut chances to trouble the American defence.

“Their quality is clear, their power is clear, their athleticism is clear,” Popovic said after the match.

“We didn’t match that in the first half. We found it difficult to win challenges and second balls. We were slow to every ball and couldn’t really regain any momentum.”

Despite the defeat, the Australian coach praised his side’s response after halftime.

“You can easily cave in under that type of pressure, physically and emotionally, but the players responded extremely well. The second half was much better,” he added.

The victory guarantees the United States a place in the knockout stage ahead of their final Group D fixture against Türkiye on June 25. Pochettino’s men could also finish top of the group if results elsewhere go their way.

For Australia, the loss leaves them on three points and facing a decisive final group-stage clash against Paraguay, with qualification still within reach.

The United States have now scored six goals in the tournament, just one short of their best-ever tally at a single World Cup, achieved in both 1930 and 2002. With momentum firmly on their side, the hosts will look to continue their impressive run when they return to Los Angeles for their final group match.
