Japan supporters once again drew worldwide admiration after being seen cleaning the stands at Dallas Stadium following their team’s 2–2 draw against the Netherlands in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F clash.

Shortly after the final whistle, images and videos circulating on social media showed Japanese fans collecting rubbish and tidying their seating area before leaving the stadium. The gesture quickly went viral, earning praise from football fans and observers across the world. FIFA also shared footage on X highlighting the fans cleaning up after the match.

Explaining the act, a supporter said, “That’s the culture. It’s about respect for everything, the players, the supporters and the stadium. We are honoured to be here, so we don’t want to leave a mess behind.”

A long-standing culture of respect

The practice is not new. Japan’s supporters have built a reputation for cleaning stadiums at major international tournaments, including FIFA World Cups and the Olympic Games.

According to ESPN, the tradition first gained global attention during the 1998 World Cup in France, when Japanese fans were seen picking up litter even after their team had exited the group stage.

The gesture was also widely noticed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Japanese supporters cleaned their section of the Khalifa International Stadium after celebrating a famous 2–1 win over Germany.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Dallas after Japan’s spirited performance against the Netherlands, where Daichi Kamada’s 88th-minute equaliser sealed a dramatic 2–2 draw.

While Virgil van Dijk had given the Netherlands the lead and Crysencio Summerville restored their advantage, Japan fought back twice to earn a point in Group F. But once again, it was their supporters who left a lasting impression beyond the result, reinforcing a culture of respect that continues to earn global admiration.
