Iran showed resilience by coming from behind twice to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Zealand in an entertaining Group G clash at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Monday. The match also unfolded against the backdrop of protests by Iranian supporters demonstrating against the government in Tehran outside the stadium.
New Zealand made a dream start, taking the lead in just the seventh minute. Captain Chris Wood delivered a precise cross for Elijah Just, who volleyed home from close range to put the All Whites ahead.
Iran gradually grew into the contest and found their equaliser in the 32nd minute. Ramin Rezaeian broke through the defence and calmly finished from close range, sparking celebrations among the large Iranian contingent in attendance.
The All Whites regained the advantage early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Wood once again turned provider, releasing Just, who lifted a composed finish over goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to complete his brace.
Iran, however, refused to back down. Just 10 minutes later, Rezaeian turned creator, delivering a pinpoint cross that Mohammad Mohebbi glanced into the net off the far post to make it 2-2.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Wood’s stoppage-time header comfortably saved by Beiranvand, but neither could break the deadlock.
Rezaeian was named Player of the Match after scoring Iran’s first goal and assisting the second, playing a decisive role in Team Melli’s comeback.
The game was an end-to-end affair from the opening whistle. Mehdi Taremi tested Max Crocombe early before New Zealand struck first, while Sarpreet Singh also forced a save from Beiranvand after another clever pass from Wood. Taremi later hit the post from long range as Iran built momentum before eventually finding their equaliser.
Off the field, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside SoFi Stadium ahead of the match to protest against the Iranian government. Inside the venue, Iranian supporters defied FIFA’s ban by displaying the country’s pre-revolutionary flag.
The result means New Zealand, appearing in their third FIFA World Cup, remain without a victory at the tournament after seven matches. Iran, meanwhile, continue their quest to reach the knockout stage for the first time.
Iran will next face Belgium in Los Angeles, while New Zealand travels to Vancouver to take on Egypt in their second Group G fixture on Sunday. Belgium and Egypt played out a 1-1 draw earlier on Monday.
