China and Spain played a 0-0 draw in their last group-stage match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 match on Monday at Stade Océane, France. A draw implied both the teams were awarded a point each and as a result secured their place in the last 16 phase of the tournament.

Germany had defeated South Africa 4-0 in the other match of the group.

Germany will now move into the next phase of the competition as group winners – winning all the matches. Spain, on the other hand, finished second at the points tally.

China also have four points but are trailing Spain in the goal difference section. However, China is assured of a place in the final 16 phase of the tournament since it is one of the four best third-placed teams in the tournament.

Spain coach Jorge Vilda was all praise for the Chinese goalkeeper Shimeng Peng who restricted Spain’s goal count to nil despite many shots in the post-match press conference.

China’s defence also stood firm in a 4-4-2 arrangement as China attempted to hit Spain on the counter-attack with Wang Shanshan and Wang Shuang leading the attack.

China coach Jia Xiuquan substituted Wang Shanshan with Li Yang in the second half after she seemed to be struggling with an injury as Spain continued to waste their chances in the middle.

Nahikari Garcia of Spain had an incredible chance to put her team in the lead when she burst into the box area but her shot went past the post, much to the disappointment of all the Spanish fans and supporters.

The Spaniards  will confront either defending champions United States (USA) or Sweden in the last 16 while China will have to wait to find out whom they play next in FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 ahead.
