Punjab Kings (PBKS) players took the field wearing black armbands during their IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday, in a gesture of mourning and solidarity following the tragic boat accident in Vrindavan.

The franchise paid tribute to the victims and expressed support for the grieving families, acknowledging the emotional weight of the incident even as the tournament continues. “Standing in solidarity with the families affected by the tragic incident in Vrindavan,” PBKS said in a message shared ahead of the match.

In an earlier statement, the team added, “Deeply saddened by the tragic accident. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims. May their souls rest in peace.”

Such gestures, while subtle, often carry deep meaning in sport, with teams using their platform to acknowledge moments of national grief. The black armbands served as a quiet but powerful reminder of lives lost, bringing a moment of reflection to an otherwise high-intensity contest.

SRH pile up 219 after flying start

On the field, Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a dominant batting display after being asked to bat first, posting a formidable 219/6 in 20 overs.

Openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head laid the foundation with a blistering partnership, taking the attack to PBKS from the outset. Abhishek led the charge with a rapid 74 off just 28 balls, while Head added 38, as SRH raced past the 100-run mark in the powerplay.

Punjab Kings managed to claw back briefly through Shashank Singh (2/20) and Arshdeep Singh (2/50), but contributions from Ishan Kishan (27 off 13) and Heinrich Klaasen (39 off 33) ensured SRH finished strongly despite a slight slowdown at the death.
