Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Ajinkya Rahane has sparked intrigue over the decision not to use Australian all-rounder Cameron Green with the ball during their opening loss to Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League on Sunday.

Green, who was acquired for ₹25.20 crore as a key all-round option, did not bowl a single over despite KKR’s attack coming under heavy pressure during MI’s explosive chase at the Wankhede Stadium.

When asked about the decision, Rahane offered a cryptic response that shifted attention away from team tactics and towards external clearance factors. “The question you need to ask Cricket Australia,” he said, leaving speculation open around potential workload management or fitness-related restrictions.

Despite this, Rahane had earlier indicated that having Green available as a bowling option would be important for team balance, especially after a strong batting performance from KKR, which he felt needed better support with the ball.

The remark has only added to the uncertainty surrounding the 26-year-old, who was seen bowling with a shortened run-up during KKR’s pre-season preparations. While he looked comfortable while batting and fielding, his absence with the ball raised questions, especially as MI’s openers were in full flow.

Green contributed 18 runs with the bat but was not introduced into the attack even as Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton dismantled the bowling lineup during a record-breaking partnership.

The duo added 148 runs for the opening wicket, setting the tone for a dominant MI chase. Rohit struck a fluent 78 off 38 balls, while Rickelton hammered 81 off 43, as Mumbai Indians chased down 221 in just 19.1 overs.

Earlier, KKR posted a strong 220/4, powered by Rahane’s composed 67 and a quickfire 51 from debutant Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Rinku Singh also chipped in with an unbeaten late cameo.

Despite the strong total, KKR’s bowling unit struggled to contain MI’s aggressive start, with Shardul Thakur emerging as the standout bowler with 3/39.

While there is no official confirmation regarding Green’s situation, Rahane’s comments have added a layer of uncertainty, with possible fitness management, team strategy, or external workload considerations all remaining on the table.
