Newcastle United have signed defender Florian Lejeune from Eibar on a five-year deal, the English club announced on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old Frenchman, who spent last season at La Liga side Eibar, is set to remain at the newly-promoted English Premier League club until the summer of 2022, reports Efe.

"I'm very happy to have signed. Newcastle United is a big club, and I'm very happy to be here," Lejeune said during his presentation at St. James' Park.

The defender said the move was "an easy decision" after he had been in touch with the Magpies' coach Rafa Benitez.

"I would like to welcome Lejeune to Newcastle United. He is a player that has done very well this year in Spain," Benitez said on the team's official website.

The Spanish coach said that he has known about Lejeune for a while since the Frenchman began playing for La Liga side Villarreal.

Lejeune is the second player to join Newcastle this summer after the arrival of Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu in May.
