A stunning knock from Sameer Rizvi guided Delhi Capitals to a commanding six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Match 8 of IPL 2026, as they chased down 163 with 11 balls to spare at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.
Chasing 163 on a slow black-soil surface, DC rode on Rizvi’s sensational 90 off 51 balls, an innings studded with seven fours and seven sixes, to overhaul the target at 164/4 in 18.1 overs.
The chase, however, began on a shaky note. KL Rahul fell for 1 to Deepak Chahar, while Nitish Rana was run out early courtesy of a sharp effort from Jasprit Bumrah, leaving DC under pressure.
Rizvi then took charge of the innings with fearless strokeplay, counter-attacking MI’s bowlers and shifting the momentum decisively. He found solid support in Pathum Nissanka, who compiled a composed 44 off 30 balls to stabilise the chase after the early setbacks.
Nissanka’s dismissal to Mitchell Santner briefly gave MI hope, but Rizvi continued his assault before eventually falling to Corbin Bosch. By then, the game was firmly in DC’s control, with David Miller finishing unbeaten on 21 to seal the win.
For MI, Bumrah was the most economical, conceding just 21 runs in his four overs, but lacked support from the rest of the attack.
Earlier, stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav top-scored with a measured 51 as MI posted 162/6 in their 20 overs.
Batting first, MI never quite found sustained momentum on the sluggish pitch. Suryakumar and Rohit Sharma stitched a crucial 53-run stand for the third wicket to steady the innings after early setbacks.
Suryakumar’s 51 off 36 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes, anchored the innings, while Rohit contributed a fluent 35 off 26 balls. However, DC kept striking at regular intervals to prevent MI from breaking free.
The powerplay marked a pivotal moment when Mukesh Kumar dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma in the same over, ending with remarkable figures of 2/26.
Late contributions from Naman Dhir (28) and Santner (18*) helped MI push past the 160-mark, with 38 runs coming in the final four overs.
Despite a competitive total, MI’s bowlers were unable to contain Rizvi’s brilliance as DC continued their winning start to the season.
Brief scores:
Mumbai Indians 162/6 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 51, Rohit Sharma 35; Mukesh Kumar 2-26)
Delhi Capitals 164/4 in 18.1 overs (Sameer Rizvi 90, Pathum Nissanka 44; Corbin Bosch 1-?)
Delhi Capitals won by 6 wickets.
