With their IPL 2026 campaign hanging by a thread, Delhi Capitals will look to stay alive when they face Kolkata Knight Riders in a must-win clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Friday.
Delhi, currently seventh on the points table with eight points from 10 matches, need victories in all their remaining four games to reach 16 points and keep their playoff hopes alive. KKR, placed eighth, are in a similar situation and need to win all five of their remaining matches to stay in contention.
For DC, one of the biggest talking points ahead of the game is expected to be the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch. The team is likely to opt for a batting-friendly surface in a bid to counter the spin threat posed by Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy.
The decision reflects Delhi’s concerns over their batting struggles on difficult surfaces. Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, DC collapsed to 9 for 6 on a seaming track, while on slower pitches, they struggled badly against the spin attacks of Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings.
KKR’s spin duo of Narine and Varun could once again pose a major challenge for the Delhi batting unit. Narine has maintained an economy rate of 6.80 this season, while Varun has also been effective in controlling the middle overs.
Adding to DC’s concerns is the poor form of premier spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who is enduring one of his toughest IPL seasons. In 10 matches, Kuldeep has picked up only seven wickets while conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.36.
Given the inconsistency in both batting and bowling, Delhi appear to be relying heavily on flat tracks where their batters can put up a big total. The team will also hope that overseas pacers Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi can deliver with the ball if enough runs are on the board.
One area where DC could feel slightly more confident is KKR’s inconsistent top order. Captain Ajinkya Rahane and youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi have not been able to dominate consistently at the top, while much of the responsibility has fallen on Rinku Singh in the middle order.
KKR have largely stayed alive in the competition because of the performances of Narine and Varun, who have continued to deliver regularly with the ball.
Delhi’s problems, however, have stretched across departments. KL Rahul has been one of the few positives, scoring 445 runs at a strike rate above 180, but the team has not received enough support from the rest of the batting line-up.
The continued backing of Pathum Nissanka despite modest returns has raised questions, while Karun Nair has struggled badly for runs. Nitish Rana, too, has found it difficult to deal with short-pitched bowling despite his experience.
The Indian pace attack has also failed to make an impact consistently. Mukesh Kumar, T Natarajan and Auqib Nabi Darhave all leaked runs heavily this season. No DC bowler has managed to reach double digits in wickets so far, with captain Axar Patel leading the charts for the side with nine wickets at an economy rate of 8.25.
