India continued its impressive run in the weightlifting competition at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched the silver medal in the women’s 53kg event on Monday.
The 23-year-old produced a personal-best total of 199kg, lifting 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk, to finish second on the podium. Her clean and jerk effort and overall total were both personal bests.
Nigeria’s Didih Onome Omolola claimed the gold medal with a total of 206kg (93kg snatch + 113kg clean and jerk), while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx took bronze with 178kg.
Gyaneshwari was consistent throughout the competition. After opening with 88kg in the snatch, she successfully lifted 103kg, 107kg and 111kg in the clean and jerk to secure India’s latest medal in the weightlifting arena.
Omolola, however, proved too strong, matching the Commonwealth and Games record in the clean and jerk with a successful 113kg lift to comfortably seal the gold medal.
South Africa’s Johanni Taljaard finished fourth with a total of 175kg, while Solomon Islands’ Jenly Tegu Wini placed fifth with 172kg.
Gyaneshwari’s silver further strengthened India’s medal tally in Glasgow and made her the country’s third weightlifting medallist at the Games, following Mirabai Chanu’s gold and Raja Muthupandi’s silver.
Hailing from Chhattisgarh, Gyaneshwari took up weightlifting at a young age and progressed through the state’s sports development system before breaking into the national setup. She trains at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala under the national coaching programme and has represented India at the Commonwealth Championships, Asian Championships and World Weightlifting Championships.
