India’s impressive run in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued on Tuesday as Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg event, earning her second successive Commonwealth Games podium finish.
The Manipuri weightlifter finished with a total lift of 199kg, registering 87kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk to secure the bronze medal. It comes four years after she won silver in the 55kg category at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title with a Games record total of 229kg (103kg snatch + 126kg clean and jerk), while Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau claimed silver with 215kg.
Bindyarani made a composed start after her opening snatch attempt was reduced from 85kg to 83kg by her coaching team. She cleared 83kg, 85kg and 87kg to finish level with England’s Eliza Pratt after the snatch phase.
In the clean and jerk, her opening lift of 110kg was initially successful but was overturned after a jury review due to an elbow buckle. The Indian lifter responded strongly by clearing 112kg on her second attempt to move into medal contention before falling short in her final attempt at 116kg. Her total of 199kg was enough to seal the bronze medal, with Pratt finishing fourth on 196kg.
The medal strengthens India’s weightlifting campaign in Glasgow, where the sport has once again emerged as one of the country’s biggest medal contributors.
