Star Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal in the women’s 50-kilogram wrestling competition at the 21st edition of Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Gold Coast, Australia on Saturday.

Vinesh Phogat thrashed Canada’s Jessica Macdonald in the Gold medal match in 50kg freestyle.

Meanwhile, in men’s 125 kg freestyle category, wrestler Sumit Malik won the Gold medal. Sumit got a walkover as Sinivie Boltic could not compete due to an injury.

Sumit defeated Pakistan’s Tayab Raza 10-4 in a dramatic bout. It turned out to be an pulsating contest as Sumit was leading early on but Raza came back to reduce the deficit to 2-3 after attacking the Indian’s legs.

However, Sumit didn’t allow his rival to dominate as he displayed incredible athleticism, hopping around the mat to avoid stepping outside the bound after Raza once again had grabbed his leg.

However, in a major setback, Sakshi Malik lost to Tayla Ford of New Zealand in women’s 62 kg freestyle category.
